About the museum
The museum is located in the former Capuchin monastery of Sursee, which was built for the order between 1606 and 1608. According to the directory of museums in Switzerland, the museum opened in 1962. Since 1998 the monastery building has belonged to the Catholic parish of Sursee and is used by the parish and the town; the collection itself remains in the possession of the Swiss Capuchins.
The exhibition presents the life and history of the Capuchins, with paintings, sculptures, prints, books, documents, photographs and graphic displays. Topics range from the history of the Franciscan order and the Swiss Capuchin province, through the Rule of St. Francis, Capuchin cells, writings, the library and the school, to charity (Caritas), the Third Order and the missions. Separate sections are devoted to Father Theodosius Florentini and to the saints and blesseds of the order.
