About the museum
The Haus zum Dolder was built between 1764 and 1769, when Beromünster was rebuilt after the great fire of March 1764 with wider, fire-resistant houses. Ammann (local magistrate) Johann Kopp had it built; for about a hundred years a tavern operated there, and the large wine casks were stored in the vaulted cellar. In 1866, the innkeeper of the Ochsen inn, Jost Dolder-Galliker, acquired the house, and his son Josef opened a medical practice there a year later.
Three generations of country doctors worked in the house, the last being Dr. Edmund Müller jun., from 1930 until his death in 1976. The family had built up an extensive collection. To ensure that it would remain in Beromünster, the childless Müller founded a foundation seven years before his death, and in 1970 he received the Kulturpreis der Innerschweiz (Culture Prize of Central Switzerland).
Visitors walk through the largely original living and practice rooms over four floors and gain insight into the life and work of a country doctor and art collector. The collection includes furniture with marquetry, reverse glass paintings, faience, Flühli glass, porcelain, sculptures, objects from around the world, and a library of about 7,000 volumes on medical and local history. Each year, special exhibitions in the Dolder cellar present one part of the collection.
