About the museum
The Tabak- und Zigarrenmuseum aargauSüd in Menziken goes back to two initiatives. In 1974, the association Museum Schneggli was founded in Reinach; attempts to set up a tobacco and cigar department there initially failed. On November 17, 2000, the independent Tabak- und Zigarrenmuseum was finally opened, in the presence of representatives of the tobacco industry, banks and surrounding municipalities.
It is housed in a plain chapel on the Gütschstrasse, built in 1922, which had stood unused for a long time. In March 2000, the neighbor Susi Merz, of the Chrischona congregation, bought it and had it thoroughly renovated. On January 1, 2001, she gave the property to the municipality of Menziken on the condition that it be used as a museum; responsibility for operations lies with the Vereinigung Museum Schneggli in Reinach.
The exhibition is based on the collection of Urs Merz from Reinach, who collected curiosities as a schoolboy and from 1990 ran a private museum. It comprises around 13,000 labels from Kopfzigarren, about 125,000 cigar bands and some 250 posters and enamel signs. In 2001 he donated it to the Vereinigung Museum Schneggli. The book "Tabago", published for the opening, presents the collection and sheds light on the history of tobacco in the Wynen and Seetal valleys.
