About the museum

The present-day Entlebucherhaus was built in 1914/15 by the Entlebuch municipalities as a children's home. Orphans and children from large or troubled families lived here, at times up to 160, cared for by Baldegg Sisters, and attended the in-house school. In 1962 the home was closed. The canton of Lucerne took over the building and set up a special school, which moved into a new building in 1975; afterwards part of the house served as a temporary home for the agricultural school and the farmers' wives' school until 1991.

As early as 1978, a local history museum opened on the second floor. For the jubilee "600 Years of the City and Canton of Lucerne", the canton gave the house to all the Entlebuch municipalities in 1986. The museum was then able to expand over two floors, and a cultural center with its own events developed. Since the two sponsoring associations merged in 2007, the Verein Entlebucherhaus has been responsible for the entire operation.

The exhibition presents the cultural heritage of the region: rural everyday life, traditional crafts, agriculture, alpine and forestry work, customs, tourism, and popular piety, as well as a special collection of Flühli glass. Newer sections are devoted to the history of the Entlebuch, the music of the Entlebuch, and winter sports and summer cures.
