About the museum
Meinrad Burch-Korrodi (1897–1978) was a goldsmith and entrepreneur from Obwalden, regarded as the most important Swiss goldsmith of the 20th century. With a strict design language inspired by the Bauhaus, he renewed above all sacred art and broke with the Baroque ideas of how chalices, monstrances and jewelry should look. In his workshop in Zurich, between six and twenty people worked, depending on the year.
On February 26, 1972, he and his wife Hedwig Maria Burch-Wyser established the Stiftung Graphische Sammlung Meinrad Burch-Korrodi. Its purpose was to preserve his collection and make it publicly accessible in the canton. The foundation's holdings include the graphic collection with drawings, watercolors, gouaches, oil paintings and historical photographs from Obwalden, as well as the gold and silver works; the holdings were donated to the canton of Obwalden.
In 2007, a “Schatzkammer” (treasure chamber) was created from a room in the basement of the Education and Culture Department in the Alte Kollegium in Sarnen. A multi-image show and staged objects from the collection bring the goldsmith's career and work to life there. Visits are only possible for groups, by advance registration.
