About the museum

The idea for a museum dedicated to marksmanship in Ausserrhoden arose in 1994. A working group first looked for suitable premises, a detailed concept followed in 1996, and in 1997 a petition to the cantonal government and the formation of a museum committee. Conversion and extension work began in 1998; until 2001, exhibits, donations and patrons' contributions were collected. The museum opened in 2001, and in 2002 the Verein Schützenmuseum AR was founded in Trogen.

The museum is located on the top floor of the magnificent Zellweger Double Palace at Landsgemeindeplatz 5. Historic weapons, flags and insignia of Ausserrhoden marksmanship are kept and documented here. Besides the weapons, the exhibition also shows the variety of crafts, skills and creativity, as well as artful women's handiwork.

The museum also sees itself as an archive for documents, artefacts and media of all Ausserrhoden shooting sections, both active and dissolved. The team works on a voluntary basis, without compensation or subsidies; operations are financed by membership fees, contributions from the shooting sections and the cantonal shooting association, and by donations. After registration, visitors can also have the museum opened for groups, company or government events, with an apéro on request.
