About the museum

It began with the initiative of two collectors who, a good 30 years ago, merged their two collections to make the pieces accessible to themselves and to interested people. The response was good, the collection grew, and the private show became an open museum for visitors as well as for other collectors who could contribute objects. Since 1994, a patrons' and supporters' association has supported the work; in 2023 it merged into the Verein Velomuseum Rehetobel, which runs the operation and has around 90 members.

The private collectors' community, with only a few members, supplies the objects, designs the exhibition, maintains the machines and looks after the visitors. The collection shows the history of the bicycle from the beginning of the cycling age around 200 years ago to the present day and also includes clothing, accessories and club insignia. The team places particular value on local connections and the original condition of the pieces; bicycles that are still roadworthy are also ridden, in keeping with the motto "Experience the history of the bicycle".

The museum is housed on the ground floor of the "Sprötzehuus", the old fire station of Rehetobel. Since 2020 it has belonged to the cooperative "Kultur im Sprötzehuus", which wants to preserve the building for the village; the Velomuseum is a tenant there, and there is also a cultural space for exhibitions and events.
