About the museum
The Alte Post in Weisstannen is a late Baroque house more than 250 years old. In the 19th century it was the Wirtschaft zum Alpenthal inn, where the log drivers celebrated once they had floated the timber from the Weisstannental valley down to Lake Walen (Walensee). Later the house served as a bakery, shop and post office and remained an important meeting place in the village.
The museum is run by the Stiftung Erlebnis Weisstannental foundation, which has existed since 1998; the museum itself has been around since 2013. The small museum complex also includes the Alte Dorfsäge, a village sawmill built in 1739 with an overshot waterwheel that the foundation has carefully restored, the Alte Sennerei (old dairy) and a display on 19th-century timber floating by the stream.
Instead of long texts, the museum relies on multimedia: a multivision show runs in the Oubertili cinema, and an electronic guide tells of the reintroduction of ibex about 100 years ago, of emigration to America and of the life of earlier generations in the valley. Visitors can try out many things, such as the old scale or the cash register in the shop.
