About the museum
The Sarganserländer Maskenmuseum was set up in 2006 in the cellar rooms of the Flums town hall as part of the 50th anniversary of the Talgemeinschaft Sarganserland Walensee. It presents the region’s carving tradition, which goes back more than 150 years; Flums, Mels and Walenstadt are considered its centers.
The museum is run by the Schnitzerfreunde Flums. The association was founded in 1991/92 to keep the carving tradition alive, and in 1992 it organized an international wooden mask exhibition in Flums that made the town known far beyond the region.
The collection comprises around 200 historic and contemporary masks in three rooms: the regional room shows typical masks from all eight municipalities of the Sarganserland and a video on how a mask is made, the history room displays historic masks, rare pieces and carving tools, and in the third room contemporary carvers present new work.
