About the museum
In the middle of the village of Libingen, opposite the Gasthaus Rössli inn, stands the Rösslischür. Josef Brand, a farmer and trained tinsmith, has collected bells and cowbells since his youth; his wife Luzia, a trained midwife, collects objects from her profession. The couple bought the old barn, converted it carefully at their own expense and set up two permanent exhibitions there around 2012.
The collection of bells and Trychlen numbers well over 500 pieces, mainly from the Alpine region, plus a few exotic examples from the Congo, Turkey and Greece. They hang from the beams in the former stable, the threshing floor and the attic, so that the character of the barn is preserved. Under the title “Trychlen und Glocken im Alpenraum”, Josef Brand shows how the origin and craftsmanship of the pieces can be recognised.
A separate room under the title “Hebamme im Wandel der Zeit” belongs to Luzia Brand. It shows equipment, utensils and old midwifery books, including two volumes from 1784, and recalls a profession that she herself learned from 1961 to 1963.
