About the museum

Who built Mörsburg is unknown; a fortification probably already stood on the ridge east of Winterthur in the 11th century. It is mentioned as "Morisberk" in 1111 in connection with a member of the Counts of Nellenburg. It later passed to the Kyburgs, who greatly expanded it around 1250 under Hartmann IV and added an Early Gothic chapel. In 1273 the castle fell to the Habsburgs, and from about 1360 the Lords of Goldenberg resided here, until the complex was sold to the town of Winterthur in 1598.

In the 18th century the town had the half-timbered storey renewed and a banqueting hall installed. After 1841 the castle stood empty for around sixty years. Around 1900, on behalf of the town, the Historisch-Antiquarische Verein Winterthur, today the Historischer Verein Winterthur, set up a museum here. The castle belongs to the town of Winterthur and is classed as a cultural property of national significance.

The museum mainly shows domestic culture of the 17th and 18th centuries as well as a weapons collection and a glass collection. Since 2016 the castle has been run, in cooperation with the Historischer Verein, by the neighbouring Gasthaus Schlosshalde, which also organises guided tours, wine tastings and cultural events here.
