About the museum

The coin collection of Winterthur goes back more than 350 years, to the city library founded in 1660, where coins and antiquities were collected early on. In 1861 the library set up a separate cabinet for them. Friedrich Imhoof-Blumer (1838–1920), who looked after the cabinet on a voluntary basis for 59 years, shaped the character of the collection to this day.

Over time it developed into an independent municipal museum that belongs to the cultural department of the city of Winterthur. It is devoted to the cultural history of money and to archaeology; the holdings are public property.

The museum is housed in the Villa Bühler on Lindstrasse, surrounded by a park. The permanent exhibition "Querschnitt durch die Sammlung" places coins and ancient objects side by side and covers roughly three millennia of cultural history. The holdings can also be searched in an online database; the library and the collection itself are accessible only by appointment.
