About the museum
The former Kunstmuseum Winterthur is regarded as the oldest of the Winterthur art museums: the Kunstverein Winterthur was founded in 1848, and the museum building was inaugurated in 1916. It is the only one of the venues that continues to expand its collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints.
The holdings go back to private Winterthur collections from the early 20th century, to which the museum owes its rich stock of French art; important donors were Georg Reinhart, Arthur and Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler and E. Richard Bühler, complemented by the collection of Heinrich Wolfer-Sulzer. In 1973 the bequest of Clara and Emil Friedrich-Jezler added one of the most important Swiss collections of classical modernism.
Alongside Basel, Zurich and Bern, Winterthur thus has the fourth major public collection of modern art in Switzerland. Until 2017 the museum bore the name Kunstmuseum Winterthur; since then, together with the Museum Oskar Reinhart (now Reinhart am Stadtgarten) and the Villa Flora, it forms the Kunst Museum Winterthur. The extension building next to the old building was most recently listed as temporarily closed.
