About the museum
The Schulmuseum Bern is a museum on Swiss school history and school culture going back to the 17th century. It is run by the Stiftung Schulmuseum Bern, supported by the canton of Bern and the municipality of Köniz. Around 60 volunteers contribute about 5,000 hours of work each year. According to Swiss Museums, the house has existed since 2008.
The museum rests on three pillars: the Historische Lernwelt (historic learning world) in the Haberhuus on Muhlernstrasse, the SchulSchaulager (school storage showroom) and the research workshop on school history. The learning world is an authentically furnished 1940s classroom with double desks, slate boards and original teaching materials, where groups and school classes experience historic lessons.
The SchulSchaulager at Sägestrasse 65 opened as a new permanent exhibition in 2026. It is conceived as an open storage facility, exhibition and research platform for around 80,000 original objects from five centuries: school furniture, teaching aids, scientific models and much more.
