About the museum
Sitterwerk is located on the site of a former textile dyeworks in the Sitter valley on the outskirts of St. Gallen, and sees itself as a place where art is made, researched and taught. In 2006 Felix Lehner founded the Stiftung Sitterwerk together with the owner of the site, Hans Jörg Schmid, and the book collector Daniel Rohner. Lehner had previously worked as a craftsman, producing sculptures for the sculptor Hans Josephsohn and other artists; the neighboring Kunstgiesserei St. Gallen (St. Gallen art foundry) belongs to the immediate surroundings of the site.
Open to visitors are the Art Library with around 25,000 volumes and the Materials Archive, which collects material samples from art production. In the Kesselhaus Josephsohn, the sculptures and plasters of the sculptor Hans Josephsohn are displayed as a permanent presentation and at the same time as a storage facility; they are looked after, mediated for exhibitions and collections, and sold. The Sitterwerk also includes guest studios, a photo lab and the art foundry.
An expansion of the Art Library and the Materials Archive was planned to begin in 2026, the 20th anniversary of the foundation.
