About the museum
The Toggenburger Schmiede- und Werkzeugmuseum in Bazenheid opened in 1990 and is regarded as the largest working forge museum in Switzerland. It shows how the craft developed from the wheelwright and the smithy to the industrial production of mower blades.
The collection includes a complete smithy setup from earlier and more recent times, around 300 hand-forged and fire-welded tools, and an exhibition on different kinds of forging. An intact, operational set of machinery rounds off the museum, so that forging can be done live on request.
In addition, the museum presents about 20 other trades, including roofers, wood turners, tanners, stove fitters, coopers, millers, saddlers, shingle makers, carpenters, stonemasons, weavers and timber framers.
