About the museum
The Mechanische Werkstätte Wiesental in Eschlikon commemorates the inventor Ulrich Leutenegger. After his death in 1932, the workshop was forgotten for almost 80 years until it was placed under protection in 2003. Since 2008 the Eschlikon Historical Society has looked after the estate.
The heritage includes machines, tools and line-shafting systems once used to work metal. After clean-up work from 2002 to 2008, the line shafting, the machines and the drive were restored. The array of metalworking machines and the line shafting with electric motor can be operated again; in 2016 the historic drive with turbine and water power was also reactivated. In the same year the workshop received the Thurgauischer Heimatschutzpreis (Thurgau Heritage Conservation Award).
The workshop can be visited on guided tours that the Eschlikon Historical Society offers on request, and on the annual Mühlentag (Mill Day).
