About the museum
An Iodhlann is the historical centre of the Isle of Tiree. Its name is Gaelic for a stackyard, the place where a harvest is stored. The centre has gathered material about Tiree since 1997 and marked its 25th anniversary in 2023. It is a Scottish charity.
The collection holds about 11,800 items, including some 4,500 photographs, and is catalogued online. The centre also keeps a library, offers genealogy resources through a family history section, and carries out archive research by arrangement.
Visitors can see a permanent exhibition about the island, and the centre mounts changing displays; the current one looks at the history of dairy produce on Tiree. Past exhibitions are documented in booklets and in a virtual tour on the website. The shop sells books on local walks, birds, flowers and history. Members receive a newsletter twice a year and free entry to exhibitions.
