About the museum
The Ross of Mull Historical Centre was established in 1997 and is a Scottish charitable organisation that relies on donations. It is housed in a small cottage called Millbrae Cottage in Bunessan, next to a ruined watermill beside the River Bunessan.
The centre documents the history of the people and culture of the Ross of Mull, the long peninsula in the south-west of the island. Its holdings include displays, a small library, publications for sale and a large archive of genealogical material. Much of its work records the cleared crofting townships and the families who lived in them. Volunteers provide local knowledge for visitors.
The centre also publishes walking guides to the seven districts of the Ross. The Ross of Mull Community Garden lies in the grounds, and the Old Bunessan Mill next door has been renovated and equipped with interpretation boards.
