About the museum
The Old Byre Heritage Centre stands in Glen Bellart, close to the village of Dervaig on the Isle of Mull. It is a privately run visitor attraction that celebrated its 40th season in 2025. The centre introduces the history and natural history of Mull and Iona in a relaxed way.
The museum has 25 miniature dioramas, small stage scenes in which figures are busy at work or play, showing episodes from the island's past. Six wildlife habitats of Mull are presented, along with photographic displays of wild flowers, moths, caterpillars, butterflies, fungi and mushrooms, and displays on fish, geology and seashells. Two half-hour films complete the visit: one tells the history of Mull from the hunter-gatherers onwards, and the other shows the island's wildlife on land and in the surrounding waters.
The centre also has a tearoom known for home baking, and a gift shop. The centre and its house have been offered for sale on the open market.
