About the museum
The Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture, often shortened to ALMoS, is dedicated to the work of a living artist and presents itself as the first museum in Europe to do so. The sculptor Andrew Logan and his partner Michael Davis bought a set of disused squash courts in Berriew in 1988. Michael designed the conversion, which was paid for partly by the couple themselves and partly through grants and donations from patrons. The museum opened to the public in 1991.
The galleries show sculptures, mirrored portraits, watercolours, jewellery and photographs from the mid-1960s to the present day. Among them are series such as Birds of a Feather from the late 1970s and large pieces including The Cosmic Egg, The Living Taj Mahal and Egypt Revisited. The collection also holds personal items that Logan made for friends such as the actor Divine and the painter Luciana Martinez de la Rosa, which were left to the museum by their estates.
A large section is devoted to Alternative Miss World, the costume and performance event that Logan first staged in 1972. The display includes host and hostess outfits, some made with the designer Zandra Rhodes, and a cabinet of crowns, sceptres and orbs made for winners of the event. Each year on the August Bank Holiday weekend the museum holds a Jewellery Extravaganza, a parade of wearable art, to mark the anniversary of its opening.
