About the museum
Dualchas is the heritage centre of Barra and Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides. The local historical society was formed in 1995 to conserve and promote the culture and heritage of the two islands, and the centre opened in Castlebay on 6 September 1996, when it was opened by the long-serving district nurse Mòr Eòsa. It has since welcomed visitors from around the world who are interested in the islands' history.
The centre holds artefacts, documents, photographs and archives on Barra and Vatersay, and the society arranges exhibitions, displays and events of a social and educational kind. It stands a short walk from the main street, with views over the bay to Kisimul Castle.
Exhibitions include a recreation of a traditional blackhouse living room, showing how islanders lived and the hardships they faced, and video guides to the settlements of the Bentangaval peninsula, presented mostly in Gaelic with English translation. Another display shows wallpaper and mural designs by the artist Peggy Angus, who bought a house on Barra in the 1950s. A research room offers historic photographs, old newspapers and a medal collection, and a shop and tearoom serve visitors. Talks, music sessions and other events are held through the year.
