About the museum
Blaina Heritage Museum is run by the Blaina Heritage Action Group, a team of local volunteers who work to keep the story of Blaina and the surrounding valley alive. It is housed in the Blaina Institute on High Street, the same building that holds the town library.
The displays follow everyday life in a former mining and ironworking community. They cover the local coal and iron industries, chapels, schools, societies, sport and well-known local people, and they include mining and military memorabilia and a large collection of old photographs of the area.
A furnished reconstruction of a Victorian Welsh kitchen is one of the most popular features. The museum also keeps local census returns for the years 1871 to 1901 and cemetery records, which makes it a useful stop for genealogists and local historians researching families from the valley.
