About the museum

The Ebbw Vale Works Museum was set up in 1998 to keep the archive of the Ebbw Vale steelworks, once among the largest in Europe. The idea came from the works manager before his retirement, and the former employee Mel Warrender gathered records, photographs and objects from garages, stores and cellars with two long-serving colleagues. A charitable trust, the Ebbw Vale Works Archival Trust, was formed in 2003 to protect the collection.

The museum is housed in the General Offices on Steelworks Road, the former headquarters of the works and the only surviving steelworks building in the town. The works developed from an ironworks founded in 1790 and grew into a steelworks that reached its peak employment of nearly 12,000 people in the 1960s before closing in the early 2000s.

The collection includes company records, tens of thousands of photographs and objects, among them a carved chair used by Edward, Prince of Wales, during a visit in 1918. The museum is run by volunteers, many of them former steelworkers, who are keen to talk with visitors. It shares the building with Gwent Archives.
