About the museum

Brynmawr and District Museum is run by the Brynmawr Museum and Historical Society and is housed in the Carnegie Library building on Market Square. It was set up to gather and look after objects that tell the story of the town and its surroundings, and it has won a Nationwide Building Society award for community endeavour.

The collection is made up of everyday items from local life. Visitors can see school photographs, medical equipment, church and chapel china, police uniforms, scout and guide uniforms, sporting cups and equipment, civic shields, children's toys and photographs from the two world wars.

One highlight is furniture made in Brynmawr by one of the small industries that Quakers set up as part of the Brynmawr Experiment. The museum also holds many photographs of Brynmawr, and the society is currently working on a short film about the local swimmer Roy Francis, whose memorial stands on Market Square.
