About the museum
Castle Donington Museum was founded in 1994 to save, record and share the history of the village. Castle Donington overlooks the Trent valley, has existed for more than a thousand years, is mentioned in the Domesday Book and shows evidence of Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement.
Since 2000 the museum has been housed in the Stone House, a Grade II listed building from the mid-1600s in Apiary Gate. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, is a registered charity and is an accredited museum. It has received Heritage Lottery Fund support and has won awards.
Each year one or two new exhibitions explore village life and history. Permanent displays include ancient stones in the garden, local pub signs, and old maps and aerial photographs showing how the village has changed. The garden of the Stone House is also part of the visit.
