About the museum
The museum grew out of the habit of members of the Cefn Mawr Historical Society bringing family objects and local items to their monthly meetings to discuss them. As the collection grew, the society and Cefn Mawr Community Council agreed to turn a room in George Edwards Hall into a museum. It was opened on 28 November 2014 by Ken Skates, then the Welsh Government’s Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism.
George Edwards Hall was built in 1911 and later served as a cinema. The museum occupies the Waterloo Room at the back of the hall, and the community council provides the space free of charge. Most of the exhibits have been donated or lent by local people, and new items are still being added.
The displays are arranged in nine sections: village life, schools, industry, transport, the canal and River Dee, war memorabilia, churches and chapels, sport, and music and art. Local coal, brick, metal and chemical industries are well represented, and the museum also has film and music facilities. A volunteer team runs it, and a Museum-in-a-Box service takes selected objects to schools, care homes and community groups.
