About the museum
The museum occupies Clun Town Hall on The Square, a neoclassical building completed in 1780 to replace a medieval courthouse. It served as a market hall with a lock-up on the ground floor and an assembly room on the first floor, and today it is a Grade II* listed building.
When the markets left Clun in the early twentieth century the hall passed to the parish, and a local museum was opened on the ground floor in the early 1930s. It is run by the Clun Town Trust, a charity set up in the 1920s. The museum expanded onto the first floor in 2004, doubling its space, and the Town Hall was renovated again in a project started in 2023.
The collection shows the history of Clun and the surrounding Clun Forest. It includes two Elizabethan silver maces and the seal of the former Corporation of Clun, a large collection of prehistoric stone tools and flints, many of them found on nearby hills and traded along the Clun-Clee ridgeway, and artefacts, documents and photographs showing how life in this farming community changed over the centuries.
