About the museum
The House on Crutches Museum is the town museum of Bishop’s Castle and is run by volunteers. It is housed in an Elizabethan timber-framed building by the Town Hall, reached by a cobbled footway. The 17th-century upstairs extension is held up by wooden posts, which gives the interior a crooked character that visitors remember.
The museum works together with the Bishop’s Castle Heritage Resource Centre in Chapel Yard. The centre keeps the reserve collection that is not on display in a humidity-controlled store, together with a library of documents, maps and photographs that volunteer researchers use to add to the story of the town and its surroundings. It also answers enquiries from the public.
The museum website lists a museum shop with books about Bishop’s Castle, children’s activities and private visits for small groups.
