About the museum
Coleraine Museum has no permanent museum building of its own. Its collection is looked after by Causeway Coast and Glens Museum Services, and exhibitions are shown in Coleraine Town Hall on The Diamond, an accredited exhibition venue in a building dating from 1859.
The permanent display, Irish History Starts Here, is about Mountsandel, described as the site of the first known settlement in Ireland nearly 10,000 years ago, and about Coleraine as the first planted town of the official Plantation more than 400 years ago. The collection also includes artwork by the local artist Hugh Thomson and the books and papers of the folklorist Sam Henry.
Temporary exhibitions explore different themes drawn from the collection and are open to visitors for more than six months of the year. Other parts of the collection can be seen by booking an appointment with Museum Services.
