About the museum
The museum opened in 1993 in one of the oldest buildings in the village, the former Dower House of the now demolished Douglas Castle. The house was restored to serve as the parish school and schoolhouse, later became the village poor's house and was then converted into two dwellings.
It stayed a home until 1961, when it was restored by the Earl and dedicated as the Episcopal Chapel of St Sophia, replacing the castle chapel that had been demolished the year before. Services were held there until 1993, when the building became a heritage museum.
The interior keeps much of the character of the chapel, including a triptych christening font and stained glass windows showing the coats of arms of the Earls of Douglas, which came from the private chapel of the Douglas-Home family at the castle. The displays cover the prehistory of Douglas, the origin of the place name, the Black Douglas family, the town, local sites, notable residents and local traditions. The museum is run by the Douglas Heritage Museum Trust, a Scottish charity.
