About the museum
Crediton Museum is housed in the Old Town Hall on the High Street and is run by the Crediton Area History and Museum Society. It began as an exhibition in 2009, held to mark the 1100th anniversary of the founding of a cathedral in Crediton, and grew into a permanent small museum and heritage centre for the town and the villages around it.
The displays are drawn from the society's archive of documents and photographs. Each year there is a themed exhibition on a local subject, alongside a general display on the history of the area. One of the main attractions is a detailed model of the High Street as it looked just before the Great Fire of 1743. Recent additions include objects found during archaeological excavations in the town.
The museum is staffed by volunteers and opens during the summer season. It receives over 1,500 visitors a year, charges no admission and relies on donations. A small shop sells local history publications and old postcards of scenes around Crediton.
