About the museum
Denbigh Museum was set up by volunteers to look after the heritage of Denbigh. For years it was housed in the old Frongoch school, built in 1877, which the volunteer group moved into in December 2013. The building was damp and unstable, and three Heritage Lottery Fund bids failed.
Around 2018 the museum’s board joined a project led by Vale of Clwyd Mind to adapt the Old Buttermarket on Chapel Place. The pandemic and funding problems delayed the work and costs nearly doubled, but renovation began before Christmas 2023 and was completed in 2025, and the museum has now moved into the building.
The collection covers local archaeology, traditional crafts, wartime memorabilia, community stories, the town’s medieval roots and local figures, and volunteers prepare rotating displays. The Denbigh Community Archive, formed in 2009, holds thousands of photographs, documents, films and audio recordings and works from the same building. The museum runs talks, school projects and visits for groups.
