About the museum
Eden Camp occupies the site of a prisoner-of-war camp built in 1942, when the War Office took over land near Malton. By mid-1943 a permanent camp of 33 huts stood here. It held Italian and later German prisoners until it closed in 1949, and afterwards the buildings were used for agricultural purposes, including a holiday camp and a Ministry of Agriculture depot.
In 1985 Stan Johnson bought the neglected site. When former Italian prisoners asked to visit, he decided to preserve the camp as a museum rather than redevelop it. The museum opened in March 1987 as the first modern history theme museum, with ten huts furnished as displays.
More huts were opened over the following decades, covering the First World War, wartime life on the home front and conflicts since 1945. The Blitz experience was relaunched in 2022 and the Heritage Hall was added for military vehicles and events. Visitors walk between the original huts, where sound, lighting and reconstructed scenes show everyday life in wartime Britain.
