About the museum
The Malton and Norton Heritage Centre is the home of the Woodhams Stone Collection, a local history collection for the twin North Yorkshire market towns of Malton and Norton. It is the life’s work of Sid Woodhams and John Stone, who donated their items to the towns so that the public can see and use them. Most of the material dates from between 1900 and 1960, although some pieces are older.
The collection holds thousands of objects, so only some can be shown at one time. It is catalogued in four groups: Malton postcards, Norton postcards, social history and ephemera. A selection from each group is photographed and described on the centre’s website, together with two heritage trails through the towns, a research notebook for family and local history, and education sheets.
The collection is run entirely by volunteers as a registered charity. The centre is based at Buckrose Court on Commercial Street in Norton and is currently closed to visitors; research enquiries are answered by email.
