About the museum
The Elstree and Borehamwood Museum is an independent local history museum that opened in 2000. It grew out of a community history project and is run entirely by volunteers as a registered charity. It is housed on the top floor of the community complex and library building on Shenley Road in the centre of Borehamwood.
The museum collects objects and photographs about the town and its surroundings and presents them in themed displays. A particular strength is the story of Elstree and Borehamwood as a centre of British film-making, and exhibitions have celebrated 100 years of Elstree Studios, with displays about films such as The Dam Busters, Moby Dick and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
The museum also keeps an oral history collection, runs talks and workshops for schools and local community groups, and shows temporary exhibitions on subjects such as the history of local schools. Admission is free.
