About the museum
The Hertfordshire Scout Museum opened on 14 July 1957 and is one of the oldest permanent Scout museums in the UK. It was created in memory of F. Haydn Dimmock (1895–1955), a Scout from Welwyn Garden City who edited the national weekly magazine The Scout. Hertfordshire was the first Scout County to be formed in the UK.
Today the County Museum and Archive is at Well End Activity Centre in Borehamwood, the headquarters site of Hertfordshire Scouts. The displays are updated and extended regularly. An archive cabin on the site holds a long run of The Scout, which was published from 1908 to 1966 and is recorded as the longest-running weekly magazine for boys in the world.
The museum is aimed at young people from Cubs to Network, and a visit can count towards badge work in every section. The archive also accepts group records for safekeeping, and the heritage team can give illustrated talks on the history of Hertfordshire Scouting at local Scout headquarters.
