About the museum
Radlett and District Museum opened in October 2020 and was founded by the Radlett Archives Group. The group had kept its archive on the first floor of Radlett Library from 2018. In 2020 the collection moved into a modern, air-conditioned portable building in the rear garden of the Radlett Village Institute on Watling Street, which was fitted out as a permanent museum.
The collection documents the civil parish of Aldenham, mainly the villages of Radlett, Letchmore Heath and Aldenham, and also Round Bush, Kemprow and Patchetts Green. It includes documents, photographs, artworks, books, recordings and other objects, and a growing oral history collection. Cataloguing of the archive is continuing so that it can be searched.
The museum shows a permanent display and changing themed exhibitions, which have included topics such as Radlett at War, transport, religious establishments and schools. Its website also offers local history articles, a chronology, a timeline and photograph galleries.
The museum is run by trustees and volunteers as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and describes itself as an accredited museum. It is funded by donations and fundraising, with grants from Hertsmere Borough Council and Aldenham Parish Council. Small school groups and local groups such as Beavers and Brownies visit, and talks and presentations can be arranged on request.
