About the museum
Filey Museum is in the old town of Filey, close to the 12th-century St Oswald's Church. The building was originally two single-storey thatched cottages and is believed to be among the oldest domestic buildings in Filey; a date of 1696 can be seen above one of the doors.
In the late 1960s Filey Urban District Council invited the Filey Local History Society to set up a museum, and it opened in May 1971 with strong community support, especially from the Filey Lions Club. The building, which is owned by Filey Town Council, was extensively refurbished in 2024 using local tradespeople wherever possible. In August 2025 the charity running the museum became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
The museum's mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the local heritage of Filey, with a focus on fishing, farming and seaside fun. It reopened in stages from 2026, at first with the ground floor and a series of exhibitions on topics such as the Filey gansey, the knitted fishermen's jersey, the food and drink of Filey and Queen Street. A project to build an oral history archive of the town is also under way.
