About the museum

The Scarborough Fair Collection was founded by a local farmer and holiday park owner, Graham Atkinson, who began collecting in the late 1980s because of his passion for fairgrounds. For years it was opened only occasionally to guests of the holiday park and to enthusiasts, and it opened formally to the public in 2008.

The museum is housed on the grounds of the Flower of May Holiday Park, on the coast road between Scarborough and Filey. It is one of the largest collections of its kind in Europe. The core of the collection is showman's steam engines, vintage fairground rides and mechanical organs, supplemented by vintage cars, tractors, motorbikes and other vehicles.

The rides in the collection have been restored and can be ridden for an extra charge, including gallopers, a speedway, waltzer and dodgem cars. The spacious ballroom has a Wurlitzer theatre organ, and weekly programmes of organ music and tea dances are held on the days when the museum is open. A cafe in the ballroom serves refreshments. The museum depends heavily on volunteers, and schools are welcome for visits.
