About the museum
Scarborough Art Gallery occupies Crescent House, an Italianate villa in Crescent Gardens built in the late 1840s as a family home for the local solicitor John Uppleby. The building is listed Grade II*.
The gallery's permanent fine art collection began in 1947 and has grown through gifts, bequests and purchases. The gallery also stages regular temporary exhibitions, including touring shows.
The gallery is part of Scarborough Museums and Galleries, together with the Rotunda Museum and Woodend Gallery and Studios next door. The ground floor holds the welcome desk, a cloakroom, a shop, three temporary gallery spaces and a quiet room called Space To Be.
