About the museum
Flintham Museum is housed in the Reading Room on Inholms Road in the Nottinghamshire village of Flintham. It opened in 1999 and is run by volunteers. The museum is looked after by the Flintham Society, an educational charity founded in 1991, which in 2003 received a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to research education in the village.
The displays show rural life through the eyes of a village shopkeeper, built around the story of the shop that once stood in Flintham. Beyond the permanent displays, the museum holds historic photographs of the village and offers help with family history research, and it runs a working-with-dementia programme.
Since the pandemic the museum has operated in two forms: a physical museum that opens by appointment, and a digital museum online. Visits are arranged with the volunteer curator on a day and at a time that suits both sides. Weather permitting, a conducted walk shows where the village shop used to be and a rare mud dovecote in a back garden. Outdoor activities are also available in the meadow beside the museum.
