About the museum

Foxdale lies in the hills between Peel and St John’s and was once the centre of the island’s richest mining area, where lead, zinc and silver were worked from the 1700s into the early 20th century. The Foxdale Heritage Centre occupies the former railway station on Mines Road, which once served the village by rail.

The museum was opened by local volunteers in 2004 and was renovated in later years. Its displays record village life, the mines and the people who worked them, and the railway that served them. It is staffed by volunteers and opens only occasionally, normally on the first Sunday of the month in summer and on the Manx National Heritage Open Days, and by arrangement for groups.
