About the museum
During the German Occupation of the Channel Islands, the German Naval Commander Channel Islands was based in the nearby La Collinette Hotel in St Peter Port. His signals headquarters, built underground close by, handled the radio traffic between the Channel Islands and Germany, and between the German forces on the individual islands. It was the last operational signals headquarters on the island, working until 9 May 1945.
The network of underground rooms was later restored by members of the Channel Islands Occupation Society. Many of the original fittings have been kept, including the ventilation pumps, the heating boiler and the toilets, which no longer work. Detailed information from the former Naval Signals Officer and other German personnel helped to refit and equip the rooms as close to their original condition as possible.
Today the bunker is run by Guernsey Museums as a seasonal visitor site and is of interest to anyone curious about wartime technology and the history of the Occupation.
