About the museum
The museum occupies a set of tunnels at La Valette on the harbour front of St Peter Port. It is one of 41 tunnel sites that were started in Guernsey during the German Occupation of 1940–45. This tunnel was planned as an underground fuel store for refuelling U-boats, which was meant to protect the fuel from air attack after the RAF had bombed fuel tanks near Castle Cornet.
The fuel tanks were built in Bremen and shipped to the island in sections, and the tunnel was dug with forced labour organised by the Organisation Todt. It was never completed, because supplies from France were cut off after D-Day in June 1944, although work continued with whatever materials were available until February 1945.
Today the tunnels are air-conditioned and house exhibitions on Guernsey’s military history, with an emphasis on the First World War, the German Occupation and the island militia. Visitors can also buy military collectables and books.
