About the museum
Hallaton Museum was inspired by Mrs Honoria Whigham, who wanted to record for future generations the way of life of a small village community that was changing quickly. A wide range of artefacts was gathered to form the nucleus of a historic local collection, and a display was mounted each year. The museum has been open to visitors since 1978.
It stands in Churchgate, tucked away behind St Michael's church in Hallaton, a village in south-east Leicestershire. The museum changes its displays regularly. An exhibition on the village in the Great War, produced by the Hallaton in the Great War Research Group, won a Museums + Heritage Award in 2017. Later exhibitions have covered a social year in the village between 1940 and 1970, the village's pubs and its castle.
Permanent displays include material on the Hallaton Treasure, a hoard of Iron Age and Roman-period objects found nearby, including a replica of the Roman cavalry helmet, and on the annual Hare Pie Scramble and Bottle Kicking custom held on Easter Monday. A permanent display on Hallaton Castle, a motte and bailey castle outside the village, opened in 2026. The museum is open on weekends and Bank Holidays in a season that runs from Easter to early October.
