About the museum
The Lytham Heritage Group was founded in 1987 after a public meeting, to preserve and promote the history of the ancient parish of Lytham. Early on it staged exhibitions to raise funds and advised on the restoration of Lytham Windmill, which officially opened in 1989; the group now runs it, and it gained full registration as a museum in 2001.
By 1994 the group needed a base for its administration and exhibitions, having outgrown its archive in Lytham Library. In 1996 it bought the former Trustee Savings Bank at 2 Henry Street, a Grade II listed building built in 1899 for the Manchester and County Bank. The purchase was paid for by a gift from a local benefactor, the group’s own funds and Gift Aid. The building was restored and converted, at a cost of roughly £189,000, and the work earned a Civic Conservation Award.
Today the ground floor has two exhibition rooms and a reception area, with an office and archive upstairs. The St Cuthbert Gallery shows Our Town, a set of panels on Lytham’s history, while the main gallery hosts a yearly programme of heritage and art exhibitions from February to December.
