About the museum
A windmill is recorded in Lytham as early as the 14th century. The present tower mill was built around 1805 on land leased from the local landowner and ground grain until a fire gutted it in early 1919, when the brake failed in a high wind. The ruined building passed to the town in 1921.
In later decades the mill served as an electricity substation, a meeting place for maritime societies and a tea room. It was listed Grade II in 1951. Fylde Borough Council carried out a major restoration between 1987 and 1989, and the mill reopened to visitors in 1989. Replacement sails were fitted in April 2022 after storms in autumn 2021 had damaged the old ones.
Today the mill houses a small museum run by volunteers of the Lytham Heritage Group in partnership with the council. The displays explain flour milling, the history of the local lifeboat service and the wider story of Lytham. The machinery inside no longer works, and only some parts have been fitted for display.
