About the museum
Manningtree Museum is a small local history museum and archive housed inside Manningtree Library on the High Street. It aims to be a reference point for the history of Manningtree and the nearby villages of Mistley and Lawford, on the River Stour in the Tendring district of Essex.
The displays consist of information cases, shelves, photographs and posters about the area and the people who lived there. The museum also keeps a collection of old street images, and further sections on local history and war memorials are still being prepared.
Throughout the year the museum organises a programme of talks and walks. It has published a self-guided town walk and the Rigby Ramble, and it has produced material on Matthew Hopkins, the seventeenth-century witch-finder who lived in the area.
