About the museum
Military Museum Scotland grew out of the Mobile Military Museum, which its founder Ian Inglis began in 2013 to take military history into schools. The permanent museum opened on 3 March 2017 at the Legion Hall in Wilkieston, near Kirknewton in West Lothian, and is run by the charity Military Museum Scotland SCIO.
The collection is mostly militaria, with a focus on Scottish men and women who served in regiments and corps other than the Scottish battalions, and in the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and Royal Air Force, from the First World War to the present day. A reconstructed First World War trench is among the displays.
About 95 per cent of the displays are not behind glass, and most items can be handled under supervision. The museum also runs an education programme, a mobile exhibition, and a veterans’ club, and acts as a hub for veterans.
